A tall, glass car 'vending machine' is going up in the Goldsmith neighborhood. Right near an RTD light rail station in southeast Denver, reports the Denverite.
A Carvana used-car dealership with an 80-foot parking tower is the first building planned for the recently approved building guidelines for a patch of grass and dirt at 4700 E. Evans Ave.
City Council approved the new building guidelines on Monday, March 8. So far, no other plans have been made but the area allows for a mix of homes, businesses, and offices, according to the Denverite.
Although Carvana markets the glass parking garage as vending machines, not anyone can simply walk up, put in money, and walk away with a car.
The cars on display have already been sold online. When customers arrive at the garage, a worker gives them a token that gives them access to the vehicle.
Carvana's vending machines can hold about 20 cars at once.
Council members voted 10 to 3 to rezone the property that Carvana is planning to use.
The lack of plans for the area, other than the garage, made councilmembers Paul Kashmann, Kevin Flynn, and Kendra Black skeptical, but all three pushed past their apprehension and ultimately voted to change the rules.
"If we had the power and the means to build a perfect city," said Black, "I would put an 8-story building of affordable housing there."
