Travelers caused more than $8,300 worth of damage to an Atlanta couple’s home that was listed on Airbnb over the NBA All-Star weekend.
Now, the residents say they won’t list their home again and urge potential Airbnb hosts to “really consider” whether their listing is worth it.
That’s what Airbnb host Franklin Johnson told Fox 5 Atlanta, explaining that it’s been “a very difficult experience,” and the things he and Heather Johnson found in their children’s rooms was “heart-wrenching.”
The Johnson family told the station they submitted more than $8,300 in damages for the guests to pay for after finding burn marks, vomit, trash and more. But Franklin Johnson said the guest is “now denying that there was a party, saying it was only 10 people here” — under Airbnb’s 16-person limit — “and seems very hesitant to pay.”
But security camera footage has already caught the guest in an apparent lie: it shows about 43 people at the home on the Friday of All-Star weekend and more than 50 the following day, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
Atlanta officials heavily discouraged parties and events ahead of the NBA All-Star weekend, and the NBA did not host any officially-sanctioned events because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Police also ramped up enforcements.
Airbnb issued a statement in response to the damage caused by an apparent party:
"Airbnb bans parties, and we share the Johnsons’ outrage at the disrespect for their home depicted in that video. We are working to support them, and we have suspended the booking guest as we investigate further."
The incident comes as Airbnb is on track to establish a new tech hub in Atlanta, the company announced last month.
