Some await the return of cicadas, while others rue the day of their arrival. The insects return every 17 years, and 2021 is the lucky year of their resurfacing, WLWT 5 reported.

This year's brood- known as Brood X- has been lying under the surface for 17 years just waiting to reappear, and in just about two months, billions of them will make their appearance in parts of Kentucky

Marty Calvin Land told WLWT, "I cant wait. I can't wait to see them. They're good fishing bait and they're not half bad to eat."

That's right! You can eat cicadas, and apparently they taste like shrimp. I think I'll pass on that one.

So how will we know when they're surfacing?

Gene Kritsky, the Mount St. Joseph University dean of behavioral and natural sciences, said, "The first cicada sign that we will see will be the development of little chimneys, mud extensions of their tubes after heavy rain."

The emergence will happen sometime around late April or early May.

The Herald Leader reported that though it is unlikely that the cicadas will make a statewide appearance this year, Brood X will likely show near parts of the Tennessee border and in areas of northern Kentucky near Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cicadas will begin emerging once the soil four inches below the surface reached 67 degrees Fahrenheit.
