At least three people were killed after a driver plowed into a crowd of pedestrians near San Diego City College just after 9 a.m. Six others were injured, including two who were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

"Our crews found, obviously, a tragic incident under the bridge," San Diego Fire Department Chief Colin Stowell told KNSD.

Police said that the 71-year-old driver was traveling westbound in a Volvo station wagon when he veered to the right and onto the sidewalk.

"The way he was driving down the sidewalk, it was like he didn't take his foot off the gas until he got to the other side of the street," witness Ronnie Williams said, according to CNN"I'm like, whoa! Is this guy ever gonna stop?"

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said that officers had received a report about the driver before the crash but were not following him when he plowed into the pedestrians. Nisleit said that several tents were pitched on the sidewalk, which was in a tunnel and provided protection from the rain. It is unknown if any of the victims were homeless.

The driver, who has not been identified, stopped after colliding with the pedestrians and identified himself to the officers when they arrived on the scene.

He was taken into custody and is under investigation for driving while impaired.
