The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a 50-year ground lease for a property near Gillespie Field, reports FOX5.
The property will be used to build a new 140,000 square foot distribution center, reportedly run by Amazon.
The project is expected to bring 300 to 500 jobs to El Cajon and will be located near public transportation including a bus stop and a trolley station, according to the county.
Chestnut Properties will develop the warehouse on the northwest corner of Wled Boulevard and Cuyamaca Street.
According to FOX5, the board had delayed its decision during its meeting on March 3 after residents expressed opposition to any warehouses on the property.
Many were opposed to Amazon possibly operating the warehouse. However, the founder of Chesnut Properties said there was no official deal with the online retailer.
The board ultimately chose to approve the project as they believe the warehouse is needed in a community where 21.7% live below the poverty line, reports FOX5.
“We’re talking about the potential of 400 jobs, maybe as many as 600 jobs,” said Supervisor Joel Anderson. “When we talk about equity, this is a prime example."
The site is expected to start operating in May 2022.
