The deadline for filing taxes has been extended for Californians.
On Wednesday, March 18, the Treasury Department and Internal REveneu service announced it would be extending the individual income tax payment and filing deadline, giving taxpayers an additional 32 days to file.
The new deadline is now May 17, 2021.
"Individual taxpayers who pay their 2020 taxes in full by May 17, 2021, will not be subject to penalties and interest. This relief is available to all individual California taxpayers without filing a request or contacting FTB," according to the FTB.
Individuals will be subject to penalties and interest if they do not pay their 2020 taxes in full by the new deadline.
However, the relief does not apply to estimate tax payments that are due on April 15, 2021.
“This continues to be a tough time for many people, and the IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.
The IRS still urges taxpayers to file as early as they can and to do so electronically with direct deposit, as that is the quickest way for individuals to receive their refunds.
