Justin Bieber's Evolution From 'My World' to 'Justice'

March 19, 2021

What started with record executive Scooter Braun discovering a 12-year-old kid from Stratford, Ontario’s Ne-Yo cover on YouTube has resulted in an explosive music career.

Since releasing his comeback record Changes last year, the performer has been on a roll professionally; with several 2020 collabs under his belt and a 2021 Grammy win with country crooners Dan + Shay, we finally land at his latest full length album: Justice. To commemorate a new era of JB, iHeartRadio is taking a look back at the last 13 years of the superstar’s career, from his debut single “One Time” to his latest drop, “Peaches”.

Keep scrolling for a look back at Justin’s personal and professional Changes.

2008

Justin Bieber was discovered on YouTube after sharing videos of himself performing. In October 2008, Usher signed Bieber to Island Def Jam.

2009

In May 2009, Justin released his first single, "One Time". Following the immediate success of his debut single, the "One Less Lonely Girl" singer released My World as his debut EP in November 2009.

2010

His first full-length album, My World 2.0, was released in March. It debuted at number one on the Top 200, making Bieber the youngest solo male act to top the chart since Stevie Wonder in 1963.

Bieber made his Saturday Night Live debut in April 2010 and performed his newest smash hit, "Baby".

A month later, in June 2010, his first official headlining tour kicks off.

2011

Justin releases concert documentary, Never Say Never. Bieber still holds the spot for the highest-grossing concert film ever and the documentary with the biggest opening weekend of all time.

He debuts his holiday album, Under The Mistletoe. The festive project saw collaborations with Busta Rhymes, Boyz II Men, The Band Perry and Mariah Carey.

2012

Bieber gave us a new, mature sound with "Boyfriend," his lead single from his third studio album, Believe. Believe gave us hits like "Beauty and a Beat ft. Nicki Minaj". The music video held the record for the most video views in 24 hours when it was released, with 10.6 million views.

2013

In January 2013, Bieber became the only artist ever to have five No. 1 albums before turning 19 years old with the release of Believe Acoustic.

At the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, he received the first-ever Milestone Award.

In October, Bieber announced that he would release a new song every Monday for 10 weeks as a lead-up to the film Justin Bieber's Believe. These tracks would end up making up the tracklist for Journals.

JB tops Forbes magazine's "Forbes 30 Under 30" annual ranking.

2014

In January 2014, he was arrested in Miami Beach on charges of driving under the influence. The now 27-year-old singer reflected on this time of his life in a January 2021 Instagram post, writing:

"7 years ago today I was arrested, not my finest hour. Not proud of where I was at in my life. I was hurting, unhappy, confused, angry, mislead, misunderstood and angry at god.. I also wore too much leather for someone in Miami. All this to say God has brought me a long way. From then til now I do realize something.. God was as close to me then as he is right now. My encouragement to you is to ‘let your past be a reminder of how far god has brought you. Don’t allow shame to ruin your “today” let the forgiveness of Jesus take over and watch your life blossom into all that God has designed you to be. LOVE YOU GUYS WITH MY WHOLE HEART"

2015

After a rough prior year and despite being dragged by the tabloids, Justin suited up for the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber, where the star endured some pretty rough burns from Martha Stewart, Snoop Dogg and more.

In August, his new single "What Do You Mean?" became his very first No. 1 single on the Hot 100. He released his album Purpose on November 13, 2015, which was Bieber's sixth album to debut at the top of that chart.

After his performance of "What Do You Mean?", Bieber showed the world his vulnerable side and broke down in tears on the VMA stage. He later revealed the reason for his tears; he felt overwhelmed at people cheering him after being booed on the VMA stage the year prior.

2016

Justin won iHeartRadio Music Awards at the 2016 ceremony for Male Artist of The Year, Best Fan Army and Dance Song of The Year!

2016 was monumental for Bieber; he won his first Grammy Award for "Where Are U Now," taking home the trophy for Best Dance Recording.

As singles, "Sorry" and "Love Yourself" also quickly jumped to No. 1, making Bieber the first male artist to have three number-ones from an album since Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds.

He became the first artist to reach 10 billion views on YouTube.

2017

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee had Bieber jump on to a remix of their song, "Despacito". The song set the record for most streamed song of all time.

July 2017: The "Sorry" singer cancelled his first ever stadium tour that began in March 2016 due to self-preservation.

The pop star took the ice for the NHL All-Star Celebrity Shootout.

2018

Justin proposed to Hailey Baldwin in July 2018. They had briefly dated three years prior, but reconciled in 2018. The couple tied the knot at a New York City courthouse that September.

The superstar seemed to take a brief hiatus from music this year, even skipping the Grammys despite a nomination for "Despacito".

2019

Justin launched clothing brand Drew House in 2019 alongside friend and former stylist Ryan Good and designer Gianpiero D'Alessandro.

In March 2019, the performer announced through Instagram that he will be taking a break from music:

"I am now very focused on repairing some of the deep rooted issues that I have as most of us have, so that I don’t fall apart, so that I can sustain my marriage and be the father I want to be."

However, he showed up at the 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for a surprise performance with Ariana Grande and announced that a new album was on the way!

Justin made mega-fan Billie Eilish's dreams come true when he hopped on her hit song "Bad Guy" for a remix!

After their courthouse wedding in 2018 the The Biebers held a beautiful ceremony for family and friends exactly a year later.

2020

After announcing in late 2019 that his fifth studio album, Changes, was being released, the singer started off 2020 right with the debut of his single "Yummy".

Changes was released a month later, debuting at No. 1 on top 200.

He releases Justin Bieber: Seasons, a docu-series about his return from hiatus and his personal struggles including his battle with Lyme disease and overcoming addiction.

Justin was busy in 2020, collaborating on songs with Ariana Grande, Chance The Rapper and Shawn Mendes...to name a few.

2021

Justin Bieber won a Grammy in the Best Country Duo/Group Performance category for the song “10,000 Hours,” his collaboration with Dan + Shay.

A new era begins, as Justin's latest studio album, Justice is finally here.
