Anna Grace delivered an “ethereal” rendition of a Billie Eilish song.
It earned her a four-chair turn during her blind audition for The Voice.
She wowed all of the celebrity coaches of the NBC competition series: Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton.
Clarkson, Legend and Jonas turned their chairs after only about 20 seconds into Grace’s performance of “my future.” By the end of the song, Shelton joined his three counterparts.
Grace, 20, is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She lives in Wauwatosa, according to her bio on The Voice.
“My life wouldn’t be anything without it,” she said of music. “It’s super important to me and it’s gotten me through some really hard times.”
Although she didn’t reveal more to the judges at that time, she explained more in her bio:
“Anna started singing in church at a young age, but eventually she became self-conscious of her voice and stopped singing in public. When she was 17, Anna's whole life changed when she was diagnosed with a serious blood infection that kept her in and out of the hospital for eight months. When the infection was at its worst and her doctors didn't think she would make it through the night, Anna only thought of two things: her family and music. After she recovered, she found the courage to sing again and started songwriting. Anna now leads worship at her church, and outside of music, she choreographs and competes in Irish dance.”
Grace has endured some hardships.
Now, all four celebrity judges wanted her on their team.
Legend called her performance “really, really beautiful.”
Clarkson said it sounded “kind of ethereal…so intimate and believable.”
Shelton warned her to avoid outside influences, and to “know who you are.”
Jonas? He resorted to memes.
He hoped the memes of his fellow coaches would sway Grace’s decision. One showed Clarkson, apparently upset that “Nick is the best coach” on the show; John was “not so” Legend; Shelton, holding a dog, was deemed a “puppy hater.”
Jonas insisted: “the internet does not lie.”
“You are one of the best we’ve heard,” Jonas told Grace. He later added, “in all seriousness, you’re phenomenal, I love your voice, and it would be an honor to coach you.”
Ultimately, however, Grace opted for Clarkson’s team.
