Authorities said a young admitted to shopping on her phone while driving, which led to her allegedly hitting a Florida sheriff who was biking, according to NBC Miami.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood tweeted Friday morning (March 19) that 20-year-old Paige Bergman was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash that caused serious bodily harm. Thursday morning (March 18), Chitwood said he was riding his bike near his neighborhood in Port Orange until he was suddenly "hit hard from the rear."
“I go flying off the bike and all I could tell you was it was a burgundy-colored car, because the mirror was impaled in my back," the sheriff said.
Thank you all again for your messages and kind words. I have some road rash, a few stitches on the gash from the passenger side mirror and a fractured fibula that the doctors hope will heal on its own. I consider myself lucky to be back on my feet today. pic.twitter.com/phspkf9LO3

The collision was caught on video by a Waste Pro truck whose driver, Allen Ramos, stopped to help the sheriff, according to reporters. Deputies said they found Bergman in her car in her family's driveway, claiming she during her arrest that she hit a mailbox; this was also recorded.
The young lady who hit me is in custody on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury. She says she was shopping on Amazon on her phone when she hit me. “She did not hit a mailbox. Do you want to know what she hit? Mike Chitwood, the sheriff,” the deputy told her family. Bergman later said she had been shopping on Amazon while driving, Chitwood said.
“I know she had no intention of running me down," the sheriff tweeted. “That’s what a lot of distracted drivers say after they cause a tragedy. Just imagine if that had been a child or an elderly person on that bike, or if the car drifted a couple more inches to the right."
Chitwood said he suffered a broken leg, along with various bumps, bruises and cuts. Doctors told him his fibula should heal on its own without a cast, he added.
“I consider myself lucky to be back on my feet today," he said.
