A driver accused of ramming her car into a woman and child last week claims she tried running over someone else in South Florida, according to Local 10 on Monday (March 23).
Reporters said Phedeline St. Felix was allegedly driving the vehicle that barreled into a playground at Pompano Beach Community Park, hitting Chaunda McCleod and her 3-year-old grandson. A gate was also knocked down in the process, the news station added.
McCleod told reporters she witnessed a group arguing at the park before the shocking incident. “You see those kids running and screaming for their lives,” she said. “They were on the other side and it was a fight, so we started to get all of the kids to get them out of the park, because we saw the situation was getting worse and worse."
St. Felix claimed she came to the park to settle an argument with another woman. That's when things started escalating.
“I was attempting to run her over, but then I see someone put her out of the way,” St. Felix said, claiming she lost control of the vehicle. “I was trying to find the brakes. I couldn’t find the brakes. I didn’t mean to hit them, it was an accident and I hope they are okay.”
McCleod said had she not picked up her grandchild, St. Felix would've completely run him over. “I was just running to my grand baby. As I’m picking him up, she’s just hitting us both and we just went flying over the car and finally we hit the ground," she said.
St. Felix was arrested and appeared in bond court over the weekend, Local 10 reported. A judge ruled that St. Felix is not allowed to have any contact with the victims.
The grandson reportedly suffered injuries on his leg, while the grandma received some staples. She told reporters that the 3-year-old doesn't even want to go to the park anymore.
“I was upset, I was very upset,” McCleod said. “At the end of the day, we have to move on and we have to forgive.”
