Dallas moved one step closer this week to building a subway under downtown.

The Dallas City Council on Wednesday gave Dallas Area Rapid Transit the go ahead on apply for federal funding needed to build the subway line.

The D2 subway project will cost an estimated $1.7 billion, with up to 50% covered by federal grants, according to DART officials.

Under DART's plan, 2.4 mile long route will include three below ground stations and two above ground stations that run from Victory Park to Deep Ellum. Portions of DART's green and orange lines will have to be rerouted to make room for the subway line.

D2 has been in the works for years with DART officials and local politicians saying that it will relieve traffic and support businesses near the planned stations.

The original completion date for D2 was 2024, but now construction on the subway line is expected to begin in 2022 and completed in 2028, WFAA reported.
