Denver Mayor Michael Hancock provided residents with an update about the city's response to COVID-19 in a news conference on Thursday, March 31.

Hancock announced the City and County will continue to wear masks despite a recent announcement from Colorado Governor Jared Polis.

According to Polis, the statewide mask mandate is likely to come to an end on April 16. At that point, mask rules would be subject to local jurisdiction and masks would only be required at large gatherings like concerts and sporting events.

Denver is currently Level Yellow on the state's COVID-19 dial, reports 9NEWS.

Hancock and the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment's (DDPHE) Executive Director Bob McDonald said Denver will continue to adhere to Level Yellow guidelines until any changes are made.

The indoor mask mandate will last in Denver through at least early May. After that, the city will evaluate based on a monthly report of COVID-19 vaccination and case rates.

"We're looking at a phased easing of restrictions based on the state's dial system," Hancock said. "We're still Yellow on the dial. The goal is to get from Yellow, to Blue to Green where we have a full-blown economy humming and people are safe at work no matter where they are."
