An iconic Colorado restaurant has filed for bankruptcy, reports 9NEWS.

Casa Bonita filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 6, according to documents obtained by 9NEWS.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy involves a reorganization of business affairs, debts, and assets, according to Investopedia. Chapter 11 can help keep a business alive and pay back creditors over a period of time.

Casa Bonita has been closed since March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic caused businesses to shut down.

In March, the restaurant announced it had plans to reopen to the public but never announced an exact reopening date or timeline.

Before the bankruptcy filing, a GoFundMe campaign was created in an effort to save the iconic roadside attraction.

Currently, the SAVE CASA BONITA campaign has raised over $15,000 of its $100,000 goal.

In its 46 year history, the restaurant has become well known for its cave and waterfall with cliff divers, arcade, and other attractions.

It has also been featured in several episodes South Park as it is a beloved childhood location of co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

In 2016, Parker told the Hollywood Reporter they had considered buying Casa Bonita.

"Four years ago, it came up for sale and we had 10 minutes of like, "We should buy it," because they do have a few things up there now where they're like, this is the South Park Casa Bonita. There are people who go to Casa Bonita because of South Park," he said.
