A drug lab inside of a homeless encampment in north Denver went up in flames on Saturday, April 10, according to a report from CBS4.
Now, Denver Public Safety Manager Murphy Robinson could have to face serious consequences from the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals for dismantling the drug without giving notice.
Robinson signed an executive order after the camp caused an explosion, reports CBS4.
In an interview with CBS4's Shaun Boyd, Robinson revealed that over 30 propane tanks were find inside of the encampment and, "started to blow up. No one was hurt and that is of the grace of God."
"Evidence points to some type of drug lab, whether it was has oil or a meth lab, we are unsure at this time," he said.
But Robinson found himself in a tough situation when he discovered the drug lab.
While he knew he had to put out the fire before it spread to the rest of the block, he also knew he would violate a court order that he says treats drug labs in homeless camps differently than ones found in homes.
The order requires 48 hours notice before clearing out a drug lab in a homeless camp.
According to Robinson, the city asked the court for emergency exceptions but was denied. He hopes the unfortunate situation will prompt the court to adjust its order.
"This time we were lucky, next time we could be talking about how we dealt with the loss of life … That is unacceptable to me and have to find a better solution," he said.
Robinson says the city offered those who were living in the encampment other housing.
