A handyman helped save a 91-year-old woman from a fire on Monday, April 19, in Lodi, reports KCRA3.
Contractor Mike Becerra said he and a few other neighbors and passerby came together to get the woman out of her Howard Street home and put the flames out.
Becerra had been at the home across the street giving a family an estimate on a backsplash. When he was walking to his car, he noticed fire coming out through a window.
Becerra said he figured it was a minor kitchen fire, but as he came closer, he realized the woman inside needed his help.
"I was about to open the door (of the car) but I heard her say, 'I can't get out,'" Becerra told KCRA3.
He later learned the woman had dementia and was home alone so the only way out of the house was through a window.
Becerra said with the help of other people nearby, they were able to use crowbars and concrete breakers to get the woman out of the house.
"By that time, I had the water hose. One of the neighbors across the street had a brick. We threw it through that window and got that fire out as soon as we could," said Becerra.
