Mendocino, a small coastal town just three and a half hours north of San Francisco is mostly known for its Victorian architecture.
But it's also been gaining national attention in the recent months for having the most expensive gas in the United States, reports SFGate.
Schlafer's Auto Body & Repair is charging $6.37 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, according to owner Judith Schlafer.
The gas station has operated in Mendocino since the 1930s. Then Schlafer's ex-husband's family took over in the 1940s or '50s. Schlafer has worked there since 1968 and has run the station herself since 2004.
When asked by SFGate if she ever receives complaints about the high cost of gas at her station, Schlafer said, "They say, ‘you’re ripping us off.' I tell them, ‘If you want to take my seat and my helm over, you're welcome to do so.'"
Running a small, independent gas station means she buys small quantities of fuel and she says the price she pays has gone "sky high."
She once had up to $80,000 in debt for the Chevron gasoline she was buying for the gas station.
She now prices the gas to pay for a truckload within 10 days.
“It's really hard up here to stay in business,” Schlafer said. “I don't have a convenience store to mark up the food and the trinkets.”
