An electronic sign on the streets of Denver was hacked earlier this week, according to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI).

Three messages appeared on the digital construction sign in Denver's RiNo neighborhood, catching the eye of many morning commuters.

The sign flashed with three different phases that read, "Burn It Down," "Abolish Cops," and "Support Trans Kids."

The sign has been in the area for weeks providing travel guidance information for a construction project in the area, according to DOTI.

How the sign was hacked is still unclear but Denver city officials said they were almost done with the sign anyway.

After the sign was hacked, the city had it picked up by the company they rent from.

According to the company, the signs have a control board inside the box. If it was left unlocked or someone had an extra key, the sign can be easily hacked by someone who knows what they're doing.

"I was wondering why it was on what I thought was a DOT sign, honestly. Obviously, I support anyone’s ability to get out or make their opinions heard, but I was surprised to see it on public equipment," Eli Kunich, who saw the sign on Wednesday morning, told Denver7.

It's reported that the Denver Police Department is not pursuing criminal charges for the hack at this time.
