After three decades in Denver, Mercury Cafe has been sold to new owners for $2.07 million.

The restaurant first opened in March 1975 in Indian Hills. They eventually settled on California Street and 1990 and have been there ever since.

Residents have gone to the cafe for a plethora of community events including live bands, dances, weddings, poetry nights, and tarot readings. The restaurant also features an organic menu with locally sourced ingredients.

Although it is now under new ownership, Mercury Cafe's founder, Marilyn Megenity, made sure to sell to someone who would keep the community cafe the way it is.

“I was really lucky, in that I was afraid that the Mercury would end up getting developed or something like that," she told The Know.

Megenity sold the cafe to tech entrepreneur Danny Newman.

“It’ll still be the place for creative folks to hang out and perform or meet, and enjoy music, poetry, and amazing and local organic food," he told Business Den.

Newman also has a history with Mercury Cafe as a patron back in the 1990s.

“It was the coolest place you could go, certainly as a middle schooler, but as a high schooler as well,” said Newman.

Megenity's longtime staff will be staying despite the change in ownership and Megenity was able to spend her last weekend at the cafe enjoying classic Mercury Cafe events like her 33rd annual poetry rodeo, community yoga, a book signing, and the solstice party.
