The Center for Land-Based Learning's Mobile Farmers Market is hitting the streets of West Sacramento, reports FOX40.
The Mobile Farmers Market is part of the West Sacramento Urban Farm Program's initiative to deliver locally grown, fresh produce to communities in need.
The truck will officially launch in residential neighborhoods starting Tuesday, July 6.
In order for the new Mobile Farmers Market to launch, the program received a $10,000 grant from the Bayer Fund.
The truck will be aimed toward low-income and high-traffic food desert areas of West Sacramento. It will make weekly stops to offer residents healthy local food and resources.
The Mobile Farmers Market will also increase people's "food literacy" by designing meal kits available for purchase.
“These kits will contain all of the fresh ingredients needed to prepare a wholesome healthy meal,” Kathy Rightmire, director of communications for the Center for Land-Based Learning told the Daily Democrat.
“The West Sacramento Urban Farm Program provides access to land, along with a place to experiment growing different foods and developing markets,” continued Mary Kimball, the Center's executive director. “The Mobile Farmers Market will be a new way for our farmers to sell their products while also directly addressing the health concerns of West Sacramento residents who have limited access to healthy food options. By meeting residents where they live, we remove the barriers posed by geographic accessibility and the time limitations of busy lives.”
