California has issued a statewide Flex Alert for Friday, July 9. The alert will be in effect from 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

The California Independent System Operator (ISO) issued the alert due to the extreme heat and high demand across the state.

According to NBC7, Flex Alerts are issued when the electricity grid is overworked due to high temperatures. ISO says it's a voluntary call on residents to conserve electricity.

"Such conservation would help ease the strain on the grid during the crucial evening hours when solar energy is diminished or no longer available," the ISO said.

Residents are encouraged to conserve electricity by turning off unnecessary lights, not using major appliances, and setting air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, reports NBC7.

These measures are especially encouraged during the late afternoon and early evening when the grid is most stressed said the ISO.

High temperatures are coming this weekend in Southern California. The National Weather Service San Diego tweeted out a warning on July 7.

"Excessive heat will impact the Inland Empire, mountains, and deserts over the next few days. High temperatures are expected to peak this weekend," they wrote.
