A woman from Colorado Springs became the first double amputee to climb a dormant volcano, reports CBS4.
Mandy Horvath isn't new to climbing. She's climbed some of the highest mountains in the world and just recently added Mount Kilimanjaro to her list.
Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the largest free-standing mountain in the world coming in at over 19,000 ft, according to KSN.
Horvath, who is a Missouri native, lost both of her legs in a train accident in 2014. She had been hit by a coal train and was found by paramedics lying on a set of tracks with no legs.
Her desire to start climbing started while recovering and seeing other amputees accomplish amazing things.
“You only get these kind of experiences once in a lifetime usually, and taking the easy way out really wasn’t my forte,” said Horvath.
Horvath told CBS4 one of the biggest challenges she faced during the climb was having to crawl across glaciers.
She was accompanied on her journey by the Ahsante Tour team.
“There’s no way that I could have done that climb without the tourist team,” Horvath said. “My hands were so swollen I could barely get my bags open at some points.”
