The social connotations around the word 'geek' have shifted over the decades. These days, geeks run the world.

There's even a national day dedicated to embracing your inner nerd. Embrace Your Geekness Day happens every July 13, but it's always the perfect time to lean into your passions.

In honor of embracing your inner geek, here are some of the best places in Denver to express your love for everything geeky.

Slashers

While the Punk and Goth subcultures are definitely on the more aesthetic side of the geek spectrum, their dedication to non-trendy music and fashion is the epitome of unabashed geekiness. This new Colfax cocktail bar (which used to be Horror Bar) will be a great space to express your love for music, horror movies, and other counterculture once it's open.

Fifty-Two 80s

The '80s nostalgia has had a bit of a moment in mainstream culture, but those who are really about it love even the more obscure- and unfortunate- moments from the decade. This shop is a time capsule full of pop culture memorabilia from the 1980s. It may be one of the only places on earth where you can play Atari, find old He-Man figurines, and shop through vintage '80s clothing.

Denver Central Games

If you're tabletop role-playing and fantasy games are your thing, this game store is for you. Not only can you pick up gaming accessories and board games, but you can also participate in the store's weekly events. Their partnership with the Denver Role-Playing Group on meetup.com hosts multiple nights of role-playing.

The 1UP Video Game Bar

This arcade bar has classics from Donkey Kong and Frogger to Street Fighter. If you love pinball, they also have a pinball tournament every first Sunday of the month. True to the Denver spirit, the bar also has several local brews on tap.

KaboomVR

This Denver arcade offers up the latest in gaming technology. The business offers a variety of games for virtual reality gamers of all levels. Tier 1 offers over 20 different games to get you comfortable with immersive VR gaming. Tier 2 lets you play against your friends, and the Virtual Reality Racing Simulations takes you in different cars, tracks, and weather conditions.
