As of Monday, July 19, the average gallon of gas cost $3.49. According to KDVR, the price has risen 3.7 cents per gallon over the past week.

Coloradans who have a daily commute to work are impacted the most by these constant price hikes.

"I just filled up the other day for $80 when it used to be $50," Emily Abrahamsen, who drives from Boulder to the 16th Street Mall in Denver to get to work, told KDVR.

Gas prices are at their highest level since 2014, reports KDVR.

According to a recent report from AAA, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in Colorado is over $1 more expensive than the price it was a year ago.

The state's average price per gallon is also 40 cents higher than the national average.

National gas prices have been in a sustained price spike since November 2020, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

KDVR reports that prices have not spiked for this length of time since 2010.

Officials and experts have attributed the rise in gas prices to multiple things like drivers returning to work and vacation after COVID-19 restrictions ended and typical seasonal supply and demand problems.
