San Diego County will soon have a state-of-the-art amphitheater thanks to a generous gift from community leaders.

Daniel and Phyllis Epstein committed to giving $10 million to the University of California San Diego to support the building of an amphitheater, reports the Times of San Diego.

This project is part of the university's plan to become a top cultural destination.

The 2,850-seat venue will be named the Epstein Family Amphitheater in recognition of their gift.

“Given our commitment to music and the arts, and in particular to UC San Diego, the chance to contribute to a first-rate amphitheater struck a chord with us,” Daniel Epstein said in a statement. “The fact that someone can step off the Blue Line trolley and be at the amphitheater speaks to opening the university to a much more expansive and inclusive set of people, which is exciting.”

According to the Times, the open-air amphitheater will bring in local and international talent for over 300 performances per year.

The design includes an acoustic shell built for a variety of productions from theatrical dance to large rock concerts.

The amphitheater is set to open in the fall of 2022. Attendees will be able to access the venue from the main campus trolley stop of the UC San Diego Blue Line.
