It's been a tumultuous year for the housing and rental markets in America over the past year. Choosing to be a homeowner or a renter is an important decision to make.

According to WalletHub, around 44 million American households have opted to rent rather than buy their homes due to convenience and cost.

However, the financial website's recent study shows that renting isn't always the cheaper or better alternative. Especially if you're in California.

Based on WalletHub's findings, California cities are some of the lowest ranking cities when it comes to the best and worst places to rent in America.

Sacramento came in at No. 145 and Fresno came in at No. 132 in the ranking.

San Diego was one of the higher-ranking California cities coming in at No. 49.

Part of California's problem is availability. Three California cities (Fontana, Santa Ana, and Garden Grove) had the lowest rental vacancy rate in the study.

While California didn't make the cut, these are the top 10 best places to rent in America:

  1. Sioux Falls, SD
  2. Cedar Rapids, IA
  3. Overland Park, KS
  4. Fargo, ND
  5. Lincoln, NE
  6. Columbia, MD
  7. Bismarck, ND
  8. El Paso, TX
  9. Lewiston, ME
  10. Nashua, NH

In order to determine the best and worst rental markets, WalletHub compared 182 cities across "Rental Market & Affordability" and "Quality of Life."
