A Brooklyn man was sentenced to 108 months in federal prison for his role in a lottery scam that targeted a woman from Estes Park.

According to CBS4, prosecutors said the woman was scammed out of over $970,000.

Leonard Luton and his partner Rajay Dobson convinced the woman she had won a $2.8 million lottery and a new car. They then demanded she pay thousands of dollars in fees to receive her winnings.

A press release from the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Denver says the woman was instructed to mail packages of cash, cashier's checks, and cell phones to the addresses of Luton's friends.

In October 2018 Luton and Dobson traveled to the woman's home in Estes Park and demanded she hand over $65,000 in cash. Dobson knocked on her front door at 1:30 A.M. using fake FBI agent badges.

Luton then returned the following January to get more cash from her. When he arrived, FBI agents and officers from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office were waiting for him.

Luton was indicted and convicted by a jury in February of 2020 to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and eight counts of aiding and abetting mail fraud, reports CBS4.

Luton was ordered to repay $881,477.41 and was placed on supervised release for three years after the prison sentence is completed.

According to CBS4, the case against Dobson is still active.
