It may have started as a “tongue-in-cheek campaign,” but Zombie Preparedness information is here to stay.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched the page to “engage new audiences with preparedness messages,” and it took off. Now, “we continue to reach and engage a wide variety of audiences on all hazards preparedness via ‘zombie preparedness’.” That includes a zombie preparedness blog, zombie preparedness for educators, and other resources.

As it turns out, some cities might be more prepared to encounter zombies than others (unlikely as it may be).

Though it typically focuses on the lawn care industry, Lawn Love switched gears to bring readers 2021’s Best Cities for Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse. Its team drew information from the CDC, the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources to compile the list (find more information about Lawn Love’s methodology here).

The rankings, of course, were “inspired by the CDC’s Zombie Preparedness 101 guide,” Lawn Love’s report reads:

“We compared the 200 biggest U.S. cities on 23 key indicators of zombie-preparedness — from the share of the living population in good health to the share of available homes with basements to hunting-gear access.
“Use our rankings and in-depth analysis to help you prepare to fight the undead. Remember: If you ever encounter an actual zombie, aim for the head!”
