A Chicago police officer was seriously injured during a traffic stop. The officer pulled over a black Chevy Impala at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday (August 13) night when the driver fled the scene.
The driver struck the officer and then dragged him about 40 feet down the road. The officer managed to open fire but did not strike the driver. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to "good condition." Authorities have not identified the officer or provided details about his injuries.
Officers found the Impala abandoned several blocks away are actively searching for the driver.
Witnesses said that the driver was dangling from the vehicle as they drove away.
"He had his door open like he was going to jump out of the car," Teccara Murphy told WLS.
"He was hanging out of the car, yes, like hanging," Nefatari Fowler added. "He trying to not crash himself, but hanging out of the car."
The driver crossed over onto the wrong side of the road and sideswiped an SUV as he fled the scene.
"Flying up 63rd with the door wide open, and I thought maybe he was going to get over, but he didn't. He actually swerved into my lane, hit my car, and continued. Flew around the corner like a bat out of hell," Murphy explained.
