The Washington Monument was closed on Monday (August 16) after it was struck by lightning on Sunday night. The breathtaking lightning strike was captured by Travis Nix and shared on Twitter. He was filming near the Lincoln Memorial when the sky lit up, and a massive bolt of lightning struck the top of the monument. One person could be heard saying: "Oh, I missed it," after the strike.

The National Mall and Memorial Parks division of the National Park Service replied to Nix's tweet explaining that the lightning bolt caused damage to the Washington Monument's electronic access system and that it would be closed down so they can repair the damage.

"UPDATE: The Washington Monument will be closed today as we repair damage to the electronic access system caused by Sunday morning's lightning strike. #WashingtonDC," the agency tweeted.

This Washington Monument is the tallest structure in Washington, D.C., and has been struck by lightning in the past. There are two aluminum lightning rods affixed to the top of the structure, which are designed to safely direct the current down the elevator shaft.

The National Parks Service did not say how long the repairs will take and it is unknown if the Monument will reopen on Tuesday.
