Whether it’s because of rising rent rates, higher home prices, a new job transfer or anything else, Chicagoans are on the move.
That’s why Stacker sought to find out where they’re moving to most. The data journalism hub reports that it used U.S. Census Bureau data to rank major metro areas “by the estimated number of people who moved to the metro from Chicago between 2014 and 2018. Ties were broken by gross migration,” the report reads. The result of the analysis was a list of the Top 50 metro areas where Chicagoans moved to the most. That list shows that while some people opted to stay closer to home — at least staying in the state or in the region — others ended up much further away.
So, where are people relocating the most? Here are the Top 10 metro areas:
- Champaign-Urbana, IL Metro Area
- Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ Metro Area
- Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI Metro Area
- Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA Metro Area
- Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, IN Metro Area
- Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX Metro Area
- Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metro Area
- Rockford, IL Metro Area
- New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metro Area
