Winds have caused the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County to explode in size.

According to Cal Fire, the blaze has now charred more than 53,000 acres and is 0% contained.

About 6,850 people currently remain evacuated, reports CNN.

"The Caldor Fire continued to experience unprecedented fire behavior and growth due to extremely dry fuels pushed by the south west winds," Cal Fire said in an update. "A red flag warning is still in effect for the fire area through 8:00 PM tonight with winds switching to the northeast. These winds, combined with low humidity and extremely dry fuels, lead to critical fire weather conditions."

Just two weeks after the Dixie Fire destroyed most of the town of Greenville, the Caldor Fire devastated Grizzly Flats, a forest community of around 1,200 people, reports Aljazeera.

The total number of homes destroyed has now reached 645, according to CBS13.

The fire burned at least one elementary school, one community church, and one post office, reports CNN.

Thousands of structures and buildings remain threatened as crews continue to fight two of the largest fires in the state.

Cal Fire also reported that the Dixie Fire has now grown to a total of 635,728 acres, reports CBS13. The fire still remains 33 percent contained.

Across the nation, there are 104 large fires burning and they are mainly in the West, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
