Colorado received its first taste of winter last night.

Although it's still summer, Colorado saw its first snow of the 2021-22 season overnight on Friday, August 20, reports 9NEWS.

Traffic cameras were able to capture the dusting of snow that fell over Rabbit Ears Pass and Cameron Pass in northwest Colorado.

According to 9NEWS meteorologist Chris Bianchi, there's nothing unusual about seeing light snow atop Colorado's highest peaks during this time of the summer.

The first snow in the highest points of the state usually arrives sometime in August. It can even snow there year-round, reports 9NEWS.

This snow has many wondering when the Mile High City will receive its first snow of the 2021-22 season.

Denver's earliest snowfall in recorded history happened on September 3, 1961. An impressive 4.2 inches of snow fell over the city before Labor Day that year.

Last year, Denver saw snow on September 8, making it the first measurable snowfall in the month of September since 2000, reports 9NEWS.

Despite last night's snow, Denver's average first snowfall is on October 18, which means there's still time until the snow starts falling in the city.
