Keith Urban is the newest musician mourning the loss of Charlie Watts, the longtime drummer for The Rolling Stones who passed away Tuesday (August 24) at the age of 80.
The "Blue Ain't Your Color" singer took to Instagram to pen a heartfelt tribute to the drumming legend alongside a photo of the pair posing side by side.
"I'm shocked and truly saddened at just now hearing the news that we lost the 'gentleman soul of rock and roll,' the queen bee of the hive that is The Rolling Stones, the original, Charlie Watts," he wrote. "The heart beat of one of the greatest bands of all time, a truly one of a kind musician who's influence in unquantifiable AND will continue to be for as long as there are musicians who are working to shed all that is not needed, to get to THE ESSENCE."
"I didn't even properly know you, but I love you Charlie, and I thank you fo all that you gave us," he continued. "I'm so grateful that through countless recordings we will always be not only hearing you, but FEELING you!"
The Rolling Stones confirmed Watts' passing early Tuesday, saying he passed away surrounded by family at a London hospital. He had pulled out of the band's upcoming U.S. tour earlier this month to recover from a recent heart operation.
"Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation," the band said in a statement.
