Georgia police officers engaged in a chase with an Atlanta man accused of stealing a mortuary van from a crematory parking lot — and the deceased tolled out of the vehicle.

Kijon Griffin, 23, has since turned himself in to the Rockdale County Jail. Conyers Police Department officers pursued him in a chase “that spanned from the City of Conyers to DeKalb County before the vehicle was disabled just before Wesley Chapel Road on I-20 westbound.”

The police department confirmed in a statement on Facebook, posted as officers searched for Griffin, that the mortuary van “did contain a body on a gurney.” As Griffin fled law enforcement officers, “the gurney did roll out of the open back hatch and into the parking lot where it came to rest. Personnel on site were able to secure the body.”

DeKalb County Police Department, DKPD K-9s, Georgia State Patrol and a HERO unit aided in the multi-agency search for Griffin after he crashed and fled the scene on foot. Police say Griffin struck “multiple vehicles” on I-20, blew a tire and ran into the woods between Panola Road and Wesley Chapel. The Conyers Police Department released dash cam video of the vehicle pursuit to CBS 46.

The Conyers Police Department thanked everyone who shared their post, crediting the spread of information with “helping Mr. Griffin make the wise decision of turning himself in.”
