Less than a month after students in Nashville returned back to the classroom for the start of a new year, one local high school was placed on lockdown.
On Thursday (August 26) afternoon, students and staff at McGavock High School were ordered to shelter in place and the campus was placed on lockdown after a fight "involving several students" broke out at the school, according to News Channel 5.
Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) confirmed that the "situation is under control" but did not say what led to the fight or how many students were involved. Sean Braisted, MNPS executive officer of communications, said the district was not aware of any guns or knives involved in the brawl but did say that one student was taken to receive medical treatment for minor injuries after cutting their hand while breaking through a window.
"MNPS Security and our MNPD School Resource Officer are here to ensure the safety of students at dismissal," he said in part.
District officials said the students involved will face disciplinary action but did not elaborate on what those actions may be. As of 4 p.m. Thursday, no other information has been released regarding the incident nor the condition of the student who required medical attention.
