If you're road tripping in Texas, you're bound to see a small town sheriff hiding behind some bushes just waiting to catch an out-of-towner going 5 miles over the speed limit.
It's pretty well known that some of these smaller cities and towns depend on pulling people over and giving them speeding tickets to keep the city's budget balanced.
In the 1970s, Selma (just outside of San Antonio) was notorious for pulling in $168,000 in speeding fines each year despite only having 200 residents.
Texas law now limits small cities' reliance on speeding fines and banned law enforcement agencies from requiring their officers to meet ticket quotas. However, a recent investigation by the Houston Chronicle looked at state traffic enforcement data and found 21 towns where police pulled over more than 500 motorists per officer.
Below is the list of the 10 worst speed trap towns and the main roadway that runs through them.
- Rosebud / U.S. Highway 77
- Lott / U.S. Highway 77
- Palmer / Interstate 45
- Chillicothe / U.S. Highway 287
- Mt. Enterprise / U.S. Highway 84
- Sonora / Interstate 10
- Gregory / U.S. Highway 181
- Savoy / U.S. Highway 82
- Glen Rose / U.S. Highway 67
- Buckholts / U.S. Highway 190
