Elton John never anticipated making an album during lockdown, but the rock icon ended up doing so and recruited some famous friends for the project.
On Wednesday (September 1), John announced that his upcoming studio effort, which is appropriately titled The Lockdown Sessions, will drop on October 22 and feature star-studded collaborations. The 16-song set will comprise of John’s studio team-ups that he worked on since quarantine kicked off in March 2020.
“As the pandemic went on, one‐off projects kept cropping up and I’ve ended with a selection of really interesting and diverse stuff that was completely different to anything I’m known for, stuff that took me out of my comfort zone into completely new territory," the icon said in a statement. “And I realised there was something weirdly familiar about working like this. At the start of my career, in the late 60s, I worked as a session musician. Working with different artists during lockdown reminded me of that. I’d come full circle: I was a session musician again. And it was still a blast."
While some of The Lockdown Sessions has already been released like his duet with Rina Sawayama on "Chosen Family" and his rendition of the Pet Shop Boys' "It's a Sin" with Years & Years, the session will include 10 brand-new tracks from Lil Nas X, Charlie Puth, Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder, among others.
