This must have been an unpleasant surprise for Keith Urban to wake up to.

On Thursday (September 3), the 'We Were' singer was all set to perform on The Today Show when he realized something was wrong with his eye. He showed off the gruesome condition in on Instagram, revealing he still planned to perform despite his bloodshot eye.

"I wake up this morning, doing the Today Show, a big televisual moment and I've got this going on," Urban began the video, showing his red eye. "What do they call it? A subconjunctival hemorrhage. I don't know what I did, but that's what's going on. So I'm owning this today."

Urban was in good spirits despite the hemorrhage in his eye and didn't appear to be uncomfortable. According to the Mayo Clinic, a subconjunctival hemorrhage is "bleeding underneath the conjunctiva." Causes can range from a sudden or severe sneeze or cough to heavy lifting. Even rubbing your eyes too roughly can cause a hemorrhage to occur.

As Urban's fans can see in his Instagram video, the main symptom is a bright red patch in the eye. Thankfully, the spot usually disappears within two weeks and, in most cases, no treatment is required.

Urban certainly didn't expect to take the Today Show stage with a bloody eye, however, he still called the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience again a "breath of fresh air" after a difficult year.
