A delivery driver rescued a 2-year-old running across a busy California street, reports KMOV4.

Gerson Tavares was fulfilling one last request as a food delivery driver when he spotted the young boy in a diaper running down Burbank Boulevard in Van Nuys at night.

That's when Tavares stopped his car and ran after to try and save the boy's life.

"I run more and more,” he told reporters. “I know if I got out of the lane the drivers don't see the boy. The boy is little, little."

Tavares was able to stop the traffic and alert other drivers by waving his arms. When the traffic stopped he got the boy out of the road right in front of a church.

"When the drivers stopped, I'm like, okay. I grabbed the boy in my arms, thank you God,” he said.

His son, Igor Tavares, says his dad is a hero for risking his own life to help the 2-year-old.

"You were the right guy at the right place, doing the right thing. And for me, what makes me more proud of him was how quick he acted, with like fast reaction. Just the way I expect my dad to be. You know. My hero. I love this guy," he said.

The Los Angeles Police Department said they were able to locate the boy's guardians and return him home. It's still unknown how he ended up on the road.

According to KMOV4, the Department of Children and Family Services will investigate the incident.
