San Diego had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country this summer according to a recent report.

A June report revealed that San Diego had the 4th highest unemployment rate nationwide that month. However, the city's rate is quickly improving after the enhanced COVID-19 unemployment insurance benefits ended for millions of Americans on September 6.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the city's high rate of unemployment was due to stricter COVID-19 restrictions in California and continued participation in the federal program that gave $300 extra in weekly benefits.

Other states like Ohio and Arizona opted out of the program to force people to return to work.

As San Diegans continue to look for jobs amid a resurgence of COVID-19, new information from the California Employment Development Department and a report from the Union-Tribune show which occupations have the fastest job growth projections in the county.

The Union-Tribune reports that health care jobs are predicted to dominate San Diego County's job growth; this includes veterinary jobs.

According to the California Employment Development Department, these are the top 10 most in-demand jobs in San Diego County:

  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Statisticians
  • Medical and Health Services Managers
  • Physician Assistants
  • Physical Therapist Assistants
  • Respiratory Therapists
  • Veterinary Technologists and Technicians
  • Operations Research Analysts
  • Interpreters and Translators
  • Veterinarians

The following chart shows the education required and potential earnings for the 10 jobs.
