Camila Cabello Took 2 Tequila Shots Before Her First Date With Shawn Mendes

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes are total couple goals, but the “Don’t Go Yet” singer still had butterflies before their first date.

James Cordon hosted Cabello and two of her Cinderella co-stars — Idina Menzel and Billy Porter — on The Late Late Show With James Cordon on Wednesday night (September 8). The Carpool Karaoke segment was packed with show tunes renditions, starting with “Mama Mia” from the beloved ABBA musical and closing with “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls for the big finale.

Of course, the interviews in between songs included questions about Cabello’s real-life Prince Charming (who helped her run lines for the movie). Cabello revealed that she was so nervous for her first date with Mendes that she sang “Defying Gravity” from Wicked to hype herself up — and gulped two shots of tequila.

“I swear to God before Shawn and I’s first date I was so nervous I took two tequila shots and sang ‘Defying Gravity,’” she dished to Cordon. Setting the scene, Cabello explained “Shawn and I (had) been talking for a couple weeks…obviously there’s just a lot of (high) stakes.” At that point, Cabello and Mendes were just friends. “He’s about to come over, and I’m so nervous I can’t take it,” Cabello continued. That’s when she turned to tequila and Wicked to get her through.

Naturally, “Defying Gravity” was one of the show tunes included in the Carpool Karaoke segment. Not only was it a significant song for Cabello, but her Cinderella costar Menzel originally played Elphaba in the hit Broadway show. Watch them belt “Defying Gravity” and other songs here:
