Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, said that the only way to beat the coronavirus pandemic is through mass vaccinations.

Last week, President Joe Biden said that he is asking federal officials to mandate that all businesses with more than 100 employees vaccinate or test all of their workers. Dr. Fauci suggested that mandate may be just a start if the number of new coronavirus cases continues to surge.

He suggested that schools, colleges, and many small businesses will enact their own vaccine mandates now that Pfizer's vaccine has been fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

"I believe that's going to turn this around because I don't think people are going to want to not go to work or not go to college ... They're going to do it," Fauci told CNN'sJen Christensen. "You'd like to have them do it on a totally voluntary basis, but if that doesn't work, you've got to go to the alternatives."

Last week, Dr. Fauci also said that he would support requiring vaccination for anybody who gets on an airplane.

"I would support that if you want to get on a plane and travel with other people that you should be vaccinated," he said during an interview on the podcast Skimm This.
