Elder Tomas Ocampomejia was believed to have died in a crash on Interstate 275 last week.

But now, it’s “like someone came back from the dead,” his loved ones told Cincinnati’s Fox 19 Now.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the fatal crash on the southbound interstate in Clermont County around 3:40 p.m. on September 8. Authorities confirmed that Jonathan Bennett, 26, was driving a Freightliner tractor-trailer when he collided with a Chevrolet W4 Tiltmaster, which was initially reported to be driven by Ocampomejia, 42, along with a passenger. The driver — whom authorities initially believed was Ocampomejia — was pronounced dead at the scene, Fox 19 Now reported at the time.

The following day, the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that the deceased victim had been misidentified. Jasmin Ibarra told the Cincinnati news station that she and her mother were calling relatives to deliver the shattering news when Ocampomejia arrived at their home. Ocampomejia fathered Ibarra’s half brother, and the family was close. Ibarra continued to Fox 19 Now:

“…I just opened the door and said, ‘You know you’re supposed to be dead,’ and he just looked shocked and was like, ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about.’”

The crash remains under investigation.
