Chicago played a big role in launching Jason Sudeikis to his Emmy-winning career.

While accepting the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on Ted Lasso on Sunday (September 19), the Saturday Night Live alum earned credited three Chicago theaters with giving him the opportunities that built his success: The Second City, the iO Theater and Annoyance Theatre & Bar.

Sudeikis was up against Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Kenan Thompson (Kenan), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method) and William H. Macy (Shameless) in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.

Sudeikis described Ted Lasso as a show about mentors, teachers and teammates, and thanked those people in his life, along with his family.

The show “follows an American football coach Ted Lasso who heads to the U.K. to manage a struggling London football team in the top flight of English football,” IMDb describes. Ted Lasso also stars Brendan Hunt, Stephen Manas, Hannah Waddingham and others.

Sunday’s win marked the first Emmy Award for Sudeikis, an achievement shared by Evan Peters, Jessica Hobbs, Ewan McGregor and others. Check out the list of first-time Emmy winners here, and see the full list of Emmy winners here.
