Search crews discovered another body in the same forest where the remains of Gabby Petito were found. Officials credited the national attention that Petito's case has received for the discovery of 46-year-old Robert Lowery, who was last seen in the Bridger-Teton National Forest on August 20.
He was carrying a tent and a black duffel bag at the time and was believed to be hiking and camping along the Black Canyon Trail.
While search crews had been looking for Lowery since he was reported missing, they had no luck finding him in the massive national forest. Teton County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Sachse said that since Petito's case made national news, his office has received numerous tips, which helped lead them to the location of Lowery's remains.
"The widespread news coverage of the Gabby Petito search helped bring light to Lowery's case and resulted in at least two members of the public calling local authorities this past weekend with new information about his possible last seen point," Teton County Search and Rescue said in a statement posted to Facebook.
A search dog located his duffel bag off the trail on a steep, wooded slope.
"Volunteers spent Tuesday afternoon recovering the body from the mountainside. Collectively, the search teams hiked more than 75 miles and covered 22,500 feet in elevation," the statement continued.
Lowery's body was found about 40 miles from where Petito's body was discovered. Authorities said that there is no evidence that the two cases are related. They have not said why he was missing or how he died.
