Today, October 7, is National Flower Day.

According to Checkiday.com, the holiday is in celebration of the day that the country adopted the rose as the national floral emblem. Senate Joint Resolution 159 was passed in 1986 and was signed by President Regan on October 7.

There are over 300 species of roses and most are native to Asia but a small number are native to North America.

While the day is dedicated to roses, you may be wondering what other flowers are native to America or more specifically, what flowers are native to San Diego.

Here are 7 beautiful flowers that are native to the San Diego area:

  • California Poppy
    • These golden poppies are the state flower of California. They are also known as the California sunlight or cup of gold. They are found in the Pacific slope of North American from Western Oregon to Baja.

  • Hummingbird trumpet
    • Also known as the California fuchsia, these flowers are known for attracting hummingbirds. However, they're also known for being a perennial plant, which means it lives more than two years.

  • Coast Indian Paintbrush
    • These native perennial herbs grow in northern, southern, and central California. They tend to grow in sea bluffs.

  • Lewisia
    • This plant is named after the American explorer Meriwether Lewis who first encountered the species in 1806. Local Native Americans often ate the roots which are also used to treat sore throats.

  • Common Thrift
    • These flowers are known by many names including thrift seapink. The deep pink ball-shaped flowers grow on stems above the foliage and are usually seen in mid to late spring.
