If you've ever seen a show at The Chapel on Valencia Street, you've probably noticed a... vibe.

The red lighting and the gothic-looking chandelier that hangs above the dance floor make you feel like you're at a Halloween party no matter the time of year.

But the Chapel's spooky reputation goes beyond simple aesthetics.

Before it was a popular music venue, the building was known as the Gantner-Maison-Domergue Funeral Home.

For years, rumors about the venue being haunted have circulated and now-former employees are speaking out about some of the most chilling encounters inside the former mortuary.

Six years ago, security video footage captured just days before Halloween showed a little girl in a white dress running towards the door after a janitor locked up. No one had an explanation as there had been no kids in the building that morning.

SFGate reporter Madeline Wells interviewed former employees about the creepy video footage expecting them to admit it was a hoax.

But every employee interviewed is sure it was a real ghost seen in that video and they went on to tell of even stranger interactions with ghosts during their time there.

"I’ve seen a girl with long hair in the bathroom a few times, and also shadows in the bathroom,” former box office manager Erica Westly told SFGate. “I’ll look in a mirror and there’s s—t behind me.”

After numerous sightings of shadowy figures, doors slamming, and objects flying off shelves, working at the Chapel meant getting used to these kinds of haunts.

They've even named the little ghost girl Valencia after the street.

“I think people think it’s kitschy or spooky or cool,” continued Westly. “... But a lot of people laugh and ask, ‘So is it haunted?’ We’re like, ‘F—k yeah it is.’”
