The UC San Diego Blue Line extension will debut on Sunday, November 21, with nine new trolley stops from the U.S.-Mexico border up to University City.
To celebrate the opening day, people can ride the trolley for free all day on any line on Sunday.
According to FOX5, SANDAG and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) will be hosting a grand opening celebration with free food, live music, merchandise giveaway, activities for kids, and addresses from public officials.
The event will run from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. at the new UC San Diego Central Campus location. To find the celebration, attendees can ride the trolley to that station for free and then follow the signs to the event.
Tickets are not required to attend but MTS is asking people to RSVP online so they can get an accurate estimation of the expected turnout.
Riders are required to wear face masks on the trolley and they are also recommended at the grand opening celebration.
According to FOX5, the new 11-mile extension took over five years and cost over $2 billion to build. The Blue Line now extends from the border through downtown and along the Mid-Coast corridor, with new stations.
