Ross' Weds Blogcast: Stunning video from MI school shooting classroom

Murder and mayhem in Oxford, Michigan
Before getting into the rest of today's show topics and guests, I want to mention the horrific shooting at Oxford High School (about 40 miles north of Detroit). It's a parent's worst nightmare. There are still so many questions including, of course, motive. I don't know whether we'll ever have answers...and answers won't bring back the three teenagers killed by the 15-year-old shooter who is in custody. There are rumors that kids had heard something bad might happen and some kids didn't go to school that day for that reason but for now these are just rumors and even if they're not just rumors it might be coincidence.
Reports suggest that the pistol used was purchased by the killer's father just several days before. Especially for those who live in urban and suburban environments (rural kids grow up with a different view on guns...a better view, in my opinion), it's critically important that parents store guns where kids can't reach them. One wonders if these parents will ever forgive themselves even if they had no idea what their son was capable of.
For today's video, which is at the end of this blog note, I want to share an incredible hair-raising few seconds apparently videoed by a student at the school who was in a classroom when the shooter tried to get students barricaded inside to open the door by pretending to be a sheriff's deputy. The clear thinking of these students and (I think) their teacher probably saved lives.
Today's guests
Former Congressman Bob Schaffer is headmaster of Liberty Common Charter School in Fort Collins, CO, consistently one of the top-performing schools in the state. I will ask Bob for any thoughts about what happened at Oxford High School in Michigan yesterday. The scheduled topics, which we'll also get to, include an interesting note discussing "well-cultivated spiritedness and well-practiced courage (CLICK HERE) accentuating linkages between academic instruction, intentional physical activity, and the maintenance of a free society" based in part on this article: Physical Education, Spiritual Fortitude - The American Mind I love the concept. Bob was also part of a group that put out a document about parental rights in the context of government overreach regarding COVID restrictions and more. That document is here: InDefenseofParentalRights (constantcontact.com)
Eric Harkins (https://ericharkins.com) is the president and founder of GKG Search & Consulting, a Minneapolis-based consulting firm that helps organizations acquire and retain top performers. He is the ForbesBooks author of "Great Leaders Make Sure Monday Morning Doesn’t Suck: How To Get, Keep & Grow Talent." We're going to talk about "boomerang employees". If a company is thinking of rehiring an employee who left or was fired or laid off, or a person is thinking of reapplying to a company he or she left, what do both sides need to think about to try to make sure it works out well?
Supreme Court takes up abortion
For the first time in recent memory, the Supreme Court today takes up a potentially enormous case regarding the legal position of abortion in this country. The case is called Dobbs v Jackson County Women's Health Organization. A lot of people are anxiously waiting to see what the most conservative Court in generations will do to chip away at federal protection of abortion. I'll talk about this on the show but my emphasis is not my personal view on abortion but rather the state of the law and how I view this issue in the context of the Constitution. The best place to follow the case's development and read up on its history is probably SCOTUSBlog: Roe v. Wade hangs in balance as reshaped court prepares to hear biggest abortion case in decades - SCOTUSblog
I would encourage people who have interest in the issue to review some of these statistics: CDCs Abortion Surveillance System FAQs | CDC

Today's Video
Can you imagine being one of these teenagers? This is the stuff of life-long nightmares, but it's also the stuff of a form of heroism. Make sure to unmute the video. (Trying two ways to embed in case one doesn't work.)
