Former President Jimmy Carter says he fears for American democracy following last year's Capitol attack.

In an essay for The New York Times, the 39th President urged Americans to come together "before it's too late."

Carter said shortly after the January 6th attack on the Capitol, there was a "brief hope" the riot would shock the nation into addressing the "toxic polarization" the country faced.

However, a year later, the 97-year-old Carter says "promoters of the lie" that the 2020 election was stolen have now "taken over one political party" and "stoked distrust in our electoral systems."
